Race SMART: 2013 Broad Street Run

HI guys! So, I made it!  And I made it good!  I said before, I like to gauge the success of a race based on how I FEEL, both during and after.  And I feel/felt GREAT!  I am SO SO happy, especially in light of the way I have felt after my last two races.  I knew during this race that I had prepped smart, was racing smart, and would finish smart. And I DID!

AND I beat my previous time (1:32?)  and my goal of breaking 1:30!  YAY!  I am seriously SO proud of myself for being so “smart” with this race, because let me tell you, I was FRIGHTENED that I would be knocked on my butt as I had been the last two races. It sucked.  Big time.  Not just for me, but mainly for my little guy with whom I spend my days with and who requires (and deserves) an energetic healthy Mama.

Here is an upclose of my hat; TOTALLY appropriate for today:

It says “There will come a day when I cannot do this.  Today is not that day.”  AMEN!  So here I am at the finish, still hydrating 😉

OH and I must say, as annoying as it was, I KNOW I hydrated well because I had to pee 1.5 miles in!  ARGH!  I ran off and went behind a car 😉 SO ME.  Derp!  Oh well.  Only had to pee once.  I guess I sweat the rest out.  I felt better after that pit stop 😉  Not bad time with a pee stop, eh?!  SO I don’t think I actually crossed the start line until about 12 minutes after the race (It started at 8:30).  After a moment of silence for Boston and “Sweet Caroline,” we were off…well sorta. As I said, it took a while to cross the start. I was SO glad I brought I throw-away ZIP UP (this is key; super easy to shed) sweatshirt.  It was frigid this morning.  Granted I got to the start about 5 minutes before the official race start.  I don’t do “waiting around” well.  Anyway, I LOVED my outfit; LOVED to pay tribute to Boston and LOVED the stickers Philly provided. Nice touch.  So, I felt REALLY good the WHOLE time.  This is awesome.  Save for my toes hurting for about a half a mile before I forgot about it, around mile 7.5, I felt strong the entire time.    It was super crowded entering the Naval Yard, and I found it frustrating to weave in and out of people so much so close to the finish line (about .2 miles away).  I had NO idea what my time was because I did something SOOOO stupid at the start. In the hubub, I completely forgot to turn my Garmin on.  I was THAT GIRL staring at her Garmin waiting for the “satellites to load.”

Ha. For sure.  So once my Garmin FINALLY loaded, I wasn’t thinking, pressed start as I crossed the start and got on my merry way.  I was only looking at it for pace, as I didn’t want to go out too fast.  So I look at my watch around mile one and it says 7.somthing miles!  ARGH!  I forgot to reset it after my last race (10k). DERP!  So I immediately reset it around miles one, and knew the rest of the time that I would be done when it hit 9. LOL. Dumb. So needless to say, I didn’t have a solid idea of my finish time until I checked online. Anyway, the crowds were AMAZING, if only my name were Lindsay, Joe or Amanda. I saw MANY signs for those people!  hahah.  Another funny sign:  “Slowest parade ever.” oh and “Almost there, that’s what she said.”  hehe.  Good fans!  So I was super stoked to cross the finish line and feel GOOD!

I LOVE the medal this year and can’t wait to add it to my medal hanger!  OK, off to hang out with my little buddy…

  1. Hi Jessica! I just found your blog and I love it (great BSR recap!) I’m totally down with the bathroom breaks in random places throughout the course (I have a favorite dumpster at mile 4) ha! Congratulation on the pr and the seriously cute outfit; I love your skirt and your hat (I need to style way more at races so you’ve inspired me). I wrote a recap of the race on my new blog (fitlizzy.blogspot.com) if you want to check it out! I’m looking forward to following your running/racing adventures 🙂
